“She now has complete mobility of her arm. Her scars used to be so thick…you could measure them with a ruler. Now, you would never know she got injured. Her scars went from blood red to a very, very faint pink. I could put cream on her back without feeling the raised skin. If you closed your eyes, you wouldn’t even know she had an injury. She has been so much better since Dr. Waibel’s treatment. She is the best doctor in the world! To my family, she is THE BEST thing that has ever happened to us.”

What was your biggest fear going into the treatment?

Scarring; I was afraid there would be pain for Alexa. But Alexa actually handled it well, because Dr. Waibel is so fast and so quick with her treatment. There was no anesthetic for Alexa; Dr. Waibel doesn’t like to use it. So Alexa is awake during the treatment. All she gave her was Codine to make her tired.

Does Alexa feel any pain during the treatments?

Alexa does feel it, and she did cry for her first treatment. But it’s not horrible. She didn’t even cry on her second treatment. Everything will get better and better and less painful for Alexa. After two treatments, the results have already been amazing.

How did you find Dr. Waibel?

I found Dr. Waibel through the internet. It was actually the Berns Triplets that came up. I wanted a dermatologist that treated burn victims and I couldn’t find them anywhere. Then I searched Yahoo and I found Dr. Waibel. This woman had extensive knowledge in burn injuries and scars.

It was seeing the video of Dr. Waibel treating the Berns triplets; seeing their before and after results, that got me.

What was the treatment like – during the process?

I didn’t even want to be in the same room during treatment. I was worried that she would reach for me and cry and I would break down. I walked in when they were finished. Everybody told me that she was a champ. For the second treatment she didn’t even cry. She napped for 2 hours then she was raring to go!

What was the recovery period like for Alexa?

Same day! I was so happy to hear Dr. Waibel say that. She had at least 10 injections on the first treatment. I assumed I would have to book at least three days for her to recover. But we could have gotten on the plane that day; Alexa had so much energy, she would have been fine.

How far did you travel for the treatment?

We are from Long Island, New York so we had to travel about 2.5 hours by plane. But I would travel 17 hours to get to Dr. Waibel. The results have been so worth it. I would never change it.

What state is Alexa in now (5 months after)?

She now has complete mobility of her arm. Her scars used to be so thick; I don’t know the measurements, but you could now measure them with a ruler. She has been so much better since Dr. Waibel’s treatment. You would never know she got injured.

Her scars used to be blood red. Now they are a very, very faint pink. This is the first time I could put cream on her back without feeling the raised skin. I closed my eyes, and her skin is so smooth. If you weren’t looking at it, you wouldn’t even know she had an injury.

How are things different now??

I am extra careful of hot liquids, obviously. I am inspired to spread the message to other people who may be going through the same situation. I am creating a website to put out Alexa’s treatment to the world. I want to let other people, other moms, know that there are treatment options out there for burns.

I am never going to forget it, but Alexa is never going to remember it. That’s how it should be.

Alexa’s results

Before, Alexa couldn’t even reach up; her arms would only go half way. Now, her arms are up to the sky. Dr. Waibel has given her nothing but comfort. She has so much range and mobility, and the best part is this is just the beginning. It’s only going to keep getting better and better.

When I put her on the table to put on her cream, Alexa always points to her scar and says, “Mommy, boo boo is getting better and better.” She touches it now all the time. Before the treatment, she couldn’t even touch it because it was so uncomfortable.

The fact that Alexa has no pain is the biggest achievement. I just don’t want her to suffer.

How do you feel about Dr. Waibel?

Dr. Waibel is in this with all of her heart. It has nothing to do with the money; she just likes the satisfaction of helping people. She truly, truly cares and does everything she can to make it better. I have never experienced a doctor like her before. I want to hold her and hug her and kiss her. She is the best doctor in the world! To my family, she is THE BEST thing that has ever happened to us.

All I have to do is close my eyes and I can picture the moment where Alexa pulled the hot water off the counter. I know all I had to do is move the handle to the side. I beat myself up over that. It’s so hard to see the damage on Alexa, and let that serve as a reminder to me.

But I have learned that I can’t keep blaming myself. And now that the damage is less and less noticeable, it gets easier.

If this is 5 months in, I can’t wait to see what Alexa looks like this time next year.
