“Although I came in for acne treatment, Dr. Waibel was able to diagnose me with an auto-immune disease, basically saving my life. I had been seeing a doctor for a few years and they had never picked up on it. With cystic acne, you are very self-conscious about yourself. After treatment, everybody noticed immediately how well my skin looked. I am very easy-going about my face now. I feel comfortable in it. Dr. Waibel is not just a dermatologist; she’s an all-around doctor. ”
Q: Do you know the name of the laser used?
A: I did not do laser. I went to Dr. Waibel for cystic acne. I was put on Accutane medication.
Q: So you were put on medication rather than laser. Were you given anything else besides the laser?
A: Before the Accutane, I was on creams and antibiotics. But nothing else seemed to work.
Q: When was that treatment?
A: January of last year (2011).
Q: How many treatments have you had?
A: The thing that happened with me was that when I started the treatment, Dr. Waibel was able to diagnose the disease which basically saved me. I thought it was the Accutane and she knew that it wasn’t. I was sent to a different doctor for that.
Q: You were able to identify something that you never would have known if you hadn’t seen Dr. Waibel?
A: Exactly. I had been seeing a doctor for a few years and they had never picked up on it. It started getting worse. She was able to know that it was for an auto-immune disease.
Q: So Dr. Waibel couldn’t help you with the auto-immune disease.
A: Exactly. But she did take care of the Acne and I have never had another cystic pimple again.
Q: How immediate were the results?
A: When you’re on the treatment, it cleans your system out. It gets really bad before it gets good. I wasn’t able to finish the treatment because of the disease. But even then, it took everything away.
Q: Your first reaction is you break out more?
A: Yes. You break out, your skin gets really dry, it gets really bad, then you kind of get used to it, then it gets better.
Q: How long?
A: Only 5 months. Most of the time when you do it, you never get acne again.
Q: How long do you have to deal with the break outs and the rashes?
A: For me, it wasn’t very long. About 2 months.
Q: How do you take Accutane – by mouth or topical?
A: It’s a pill.
Q: How long do you have to take it?
A: For me it was twice a day.
Q: Beyond the pills, is there any extra skin routine you were doing during that time?
A: Just moisturizer. You actually can’t put anything else on your face because it’s so strong. It’s very, very strong. You can’t get pregnant, you are monitored very closely.
Q: Can you wear makeup?
A: Oh yeah. It’s actually really nice because if you have really oily skin, you can go without wearing powder on your face. It’s great.
Q: Are their restrictions on makeup?
A: No, no, no.
Q: How did you find Dr. Waibel?
A: I used to go to the Doctor she bought the practice from. I went to him and she was there. She seemed very spunky, very with it, so I’m like, oh I’m going to try.
Q: How do you feel about her now?
A: She literally saved my life. She was able to catch my disease. She’s not just a dermatologist; she’s an all-around doctor. My other doctor, who is a specialist, told me that I was really lucky to find a doctor that was so knowledgeable. She was able to identify that it wasn’t my treatment; it was something a little more complicated than that.
Q: How do you feel about the office?
A: They’re great. They are very loving, compassionate, helpful, very attentive to any of your needs. It’s a very nice place to come.
Q: What is something you can do now that you couldn’t do before?
A: You feel better about yourself because the scars that I had, and the cystic acne, you are very self-conscious about yourself. I am very easy-going about my face now. I feel comfortable in it.
Q: What has your reaction from friends and family been?
A: Everybody noticed immediately how well my skin looked. It was very noticeable.
