“After the second treatment, (my sisters and I) each started to notice a significant improvement – not drastic, but significant. The treatments really evened out and smoothed our scars. It has definitely gotten better with time and each treatment. Dr. Waibel is amazing, not only as our doctor but also she is a wonderful person, friend and mentor. She played a really big role in our emotional healing process as well as physical healing process. I really can’t think of a better doctor to go on this journey with.”
Q: What kind of lasers did Dr. Waibel use to treat you?
A: Fractional laser, Ultra Pulse laser. I believe that’s it.
Q: Where are your scars?
A: Mainly on the left side of my body – my left cheek, left arm, and left side of my back.
Q: How did you find Dr. Waibel?
A: Her sisters Googled a certain treatment done with lasers, actually for cellulite, but then came across the video of Dr. Waibel treating Tami. Trae called Dr. Waibel’s office in the middle of the night and a few weeks later the doctor returned the call to schedule an appointment.
Q: When was your first treatment?
A: It was in summer of 2009, I believe. We didn’t get treated the first time we met Dr. Waibel, but I want to say that both appointments took place that summer.
Q: You traveled from Texas to Miami to see Dr. Waibel, correct?
A: Yes. The flight is about 4-5 hours long. We went strictly to see Dr. Waibel. Going to get treatment was a really big deal for us.
Q: How did you feel about getting treatment?
A: My sisters and I are strong Christians, so we felt that God brought this to us. We were excited and nervous, and really overwhelmed with joy.
Q: How did you feel after your first treatment?
A: We were really excited to see the improvements that would occur, and anxious to continue with the treatments. We never had any negative feelings about the treatments.
Q: How would you describe your pain level during/after your first treatment?
A: It kind of hurt, but that is only because they were not certain
Q: When did you begin to see results?
A: After the second treatment, we each started to notice a significant improvement – not drastic, but significant. The treatments really evened out/smoothed our scars. They were less noticeable than they were prior to the treatments. My elasticity was fine prior to the treatment, so there was really no change there, but no change was necessary in that regard.
Q: How many treatments total have you and your sisters had so far?
A: I would say about four or five treatments.
Q: Have you seen a drastic change from the first treatment to the most recent?
A: It has definitely gotten better with time and each treatment. The scars look a lot better.
Q: Has Dr. Waibel given you an idea of how many treatments it will take?
A: Dr. Waibel cautioned us that the treatments would not eliminate our scars completely. For me, I do not feel the need to get additional treatments; I am fine with my results at this point. Perfection is not a realistic goal with the laser. Also, we have all become more comfortable with our scars as time has passed.
Q: How would you describe the pain level?
A: The first treatment, they were still experimenting with anthesia, so the first time it kind of hurt, but it was only because they weren’t really positive about how to numb the areas. But they worked it out as the treatments continued, and they figured out what worked best for each of us. The only place that continued to be a bit painful was the face.
Q: What kind of downtime was there after each treatment?
A: The initial redness turns into scabs, and it probably takes a couple of weeks for it to heal completely.
Q: Are you able to move around afterwards or are you immobile at all?
A: The first couple of days mobility is limited because the skin is tight. For example, you can’t really stretch your arms out.
Q: What is something you can do now that you couldn’t do prior to treatment?
A: It really boosted our self-esteem. Also, for us it was like a healing process.
Q: How would you describe Dr. Waibel as a doctor?
A: She is amazing, not only as our doctor but also she is a wonderful person, friend and mentor. She played a really big role in our emotional healing process as well as physical healing process. I really can’t think of a better doctor to go on this journey with.
When we entered the process we weren’t being very realistic; we hoped the scars and burns would disappear completely. They are less noticeable, but they are still there.
