WHAT ARE BURN SCARS?
If your skin has come into contact with fire or another hot surface, you may have acquired a burn scar. This scar is the result of the skin’s interaction with intense heat and the resulting efforts of skin cells to regenerate and close the wound. Although some burns are mild and easily treated at home, a serious burn should be evaluated by an experienced medical professional, so that you can receive the most comprehensive care.
WHAT CAUSES BURN SCARS?
Burn scars are caused as a result of coming into contact with fire or another hot surface. Characteristics of burn scars include:
- Texture that is thicker and tougher than the surrounding skin
- Red or blue pigmentation during healing
- Darker tone or lack of color when healed
- Shiny, smooth, rough, raised or depressed in appearance
- Itchiness or pain
- A feeling of constriction or tightness
HOW ARE BURN SCARS TREATED?
Burn scars are some of the most complex to treat, given the way they heal and their frequent resistance to some lasers. Fortunately, Dr. Jill Waibel is globally respected for her ability to address her patients’ most devastating and disfiguring burn scars.
Our research shows that early treatment is best when it comes to healing a burn scar. Once the skin is intact, our team will begin treatment, typically two to three months after the injury. We use a combination of approaches, including early scar rehabilitation, late scar reconstruction and laser therapy to treat patients with burn scars.
