Laser Treatments in Miami, FL

Lasers produce a beam of light that can selectively destroy blood vessels, pigment, hair, scars, wrinkles and other lesions and skin conditions. At Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute, the power of the laser is individualized for each patient living in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Kendall and surrounding areas, by our team of expert dermatologists. Our board-certified physicians all have extensive experience in using state-of-the-art lasers for treating wrinkles, brown spots, redness, tattoos, Nevus of Ota, pigmented lesions, birthmarks, melasma, acne, scarring, and many other skin conditions.

The best laser or light treatment will be chosen for each individual patient, and often a combination of different technologies may yield the best outcomes. The settings of the laser and the treatment protocol are calibrated to achieve a good cosmetic result while avoiding skin discoloration. In most cases, repeated treatments over the same area may be required for optimal results.

Our Laser Treatments

One of our main goals is to ensure patient comfort during treatment. A local anesthetic cream is used to minimize the snapping sensation of some of the lasers we use for patients with larger areas to be treated or anyone who tends to be more sensitive. Our medical team may recommend that you have the anesthetic cream on for 30 minutes prior to treatment. We will offer oral pain control and/or anti-anxiety prescriptions for more extensive procedures. If you take these medications you will need a designated driver to take you home from the treatment.

Our medical team will also provide detailed pre- and post-procedure instructions so you will be fully prepared. In some cases, laser-treated skin may be pink, bruised, or hyperpigmented (skin darkening) for up to two weeks after laser treatment. Sun avoidance is important for at least four weeks after laser therapy, sometimes longer depending on the laser treatment. Multiple laser or light treatments are often necessary depending on the results to be achieved. Treatments may be scheduled at intervals of anywhere from two to eight weeks, as needed.

Although side effects from laser procedures are rare when performed by well-trained laser specialists, there are some risks in certain cases as follows. These will be explained in detail by our medical team in advance of your treatment.

  • Skin lightening (hypopigmentation)
  • Skin darkening (hyperpigmentation)
  • Infection
  • Skin texture change
  • Scarring
  • Swelling
  • Allergic reaction to ointment
  • Activation of cold sores
  • Incomplete removal of lesion
  • Pain
  • Blistering
  • Need for further treatment or multiple treatments
