Eczema Treatment (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema often goes untreated as it may be confused with other skin conditions. In Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Kendall, FL, and the surrounding communities, of our board-certified dermatologists at Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute, diagnose and treat atopic dermatitis and other common skin conditions to relieve discomfort and restore a healthy appearance.

What Is Eczema?

Also called atopic dermatitis, eczema is a chronic skin condition, which flares up with what starts as an itch and develops into a rash from the constant rubbing and scratching. Some patients end up with a thickening of the skin in the areas where the skin itches. Most people experience the symptoms of eczema at a very young age and eventually grow out of it. Eczema affects the face, torso, and other areas of the body. It is also believed that people experience “flare-ups” of eczema during times of stress.

WHAT CAUSES ECZEMA?

While there is no known cause of eczema, or atopic dermatitis, the condition is often associated with a family history of asthma and rhinitis. Additionally, more than a third of babies that develop eczema end up having asthma later in life. Atopic dermatitis may also be caused by a weakened immune system.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE ECZEMA?

Eczema typically shows up with excessive, chronic itching in a specific area of the body. Over time, the skin becomes inflamed and irritated as if it is raw. If you suffer from this condition, we recommend you schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists to have your skin evaluated and diagnosed.

HOW IS ECZEMA TREATED?

Once diagnosed, dermatologists typically prescribe a variety of eczema treatments depending on the extent of the condition. Eczema is typically treated with several therapies including corticosteroids, bacterial creams and antihistamines. Additionally, if the rash is severe, antibiotics may be necessary to treat a bacterial infection. Light therapy may be effective at relieving the symptoms and healing the rash from atopic dermatitis.

HOW DO I PREVENT ECZEMA FLARE UPS?

Because there is no cause of eczema, there is no definitive way to prevent flare ups; however, it is possible to avoid common triggers that may facilitate the condition to manifest itself. Some of these triggers include using household cleaners without gloves, undue stress, and not caring for your skin.
